The inverter controls the whole system

  • Your house will always use any solar produced before taking power from the grid.

  • The inverter can be programmed to suit your needs, such as only use the battery reserve at certain times.

  • If you need more power than the battery or solar can produce it will be drawn from the grid.

How solar works

1 . When the sun shines, solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity that is fed into an inverter.

2. The inverter changes DC to alternating current (AC)

3. The inverter feeds AC electricity into your home so it can be used by your household loads like lighting, appliances and heating.

The core technologies here are solar panels which are called 'semi conductors' and inverters are described as 'power electronics'

With a battery

  • The battery is a DC system - the inverter feeds solar electricity into the battery directly.

  • The inverter can take the DC from the battery and send it loads in your home.

  • The inverter can take grid AC, turn it into DC, that charges the battery

  • The battery is a electrochemical storage technology.
